“When mum came I was very happy”-Luke, 7 1/2, Harewood School

When it was the 6.3 earthquake I was waiting with Lorenzo outside the library. Suddenly the earth shook. We ran to the court and did a turtle. When it was finished we lined up in our classes. Then another 4.9 magnitude earthquake hit. We went into the turtle again. Lots of the kids were scared. I felt scared too. After we went to the multi-purpose room because some of us were cold and it was a safe place to be. In there the teachers gave us food, read us books, we did jump jam and we watched the magic school bus. The teachers were really helpful. When mum came I was very happy and gave her a big hug. In the first few nights Mum, Dylan and I slept downstairs in the same room.

I can understand you feeling a bit scared when the earthquake happened but it was good that all the teachers helped look after the children and you all stayed safe. There were lots of hugs happening – especially when Mums and Dads arrived at school.

    Hi Luke

Thank you for putting your story on this website. it was good to read what it was like there and I was very happy to note you went into a turtle very quickly both times!

It is very normal to feel scared when things are rocking and rolling as they did on that particular day in a big way.

Feeling scared makes you do things like look after yourself and others too.

Your teachers looked after you very well in the multi-purpose room making sure you kept warm and providing food and games.

Sounds like a lot of hugs went on in your home that day, keep it up!

Take care, I am thinking of you lots!
