‘My story’-Flynn, 9, South New Brighton Primary
When the earthquake happened I was walking to the backfield. When it hit I ran to the netball hoop with my friends Joel and Kynan. There was a crack right beside me and my brother’s teacher fell on him. We were all waiting for one of our family members to come and a person was jumping on the backfield and we could feel it. After a while my dad jumped over the fence and came to get us. We walked through the far gate along the path. There was lots of deep puddles. We had to go around trees to get past. Then we walked from South New Brighton to Queenspark. My legs were tired and a I felt a bit freaked out. It will be a day I will always remember.
Flynn, it must have been very scary for you but i know the teachers were all very proud of how brave you all were and how you all did exactly the right thing. What a long walk to Queenspark you had, no wonder your legs were tired!
I hope that you can all get back to school soon to see all of your friends.
Wishing you and your family well.
Mrs Gibbs
Dear Flynn
I am sorry to hear the earthquake did so much damage to Canterbury, it is very sad.
I am pleased you are safe and able to write on here to tell us of your experience.
And yes, you will never forget the day. In fact you will be able to tell your grandchildren about it, and that’s a long time off!
I hope all are well after the tumultuous time you have had. Many people are thinking of you and really wanting the best for you all.
Take care from Ella in Auckland.
it must have been really scary hopefully everyone is ok and u can still live in ur house be brave
What a scary adventure, thank you for sharing it Flynn. My three boys used to go to your school, Arthur might have been in your class if we were still there because he is 9 years old. We moved out towards Oxford five years ago though. I can picture the school and the back car park and your story gives me a really good idea of how it must have been for you all. Thank you.
