‘Surviving Disaster’- Lucy, 9, Weedons School

On Friday there was a humongous earthquake. It was amazing. Suddenly there was a big bang. It was wobbly and ferocious. Finally it was over. Occasionally there is a big rumble and a grumble. The earthquake was 7.1. First they said 7.4. We were allowed to flush the toilet because we have our own sewage pipe. Most of our bricks came off. Everything came out of the pantry. It was a pigsty. I was sleeping upstairs with Mum. Jordan was at Andy’s. Danielle was at her friend Abbie’s house. Mum’s vase broke. Mum said, “Get out of bed there’s a huge earthquake.” I was awake when it finished. Doorways are not always that safe my cousins said. After the earthquake we went to Nana’s house. Both of my nanas were there. I hopped into bed with the one that lives in Blenheim. We had eggs Benedict. I felt really scared because I did not know what was going on.
