‘Freaky Nasty Earth Shake’- Nicola, 8, Weedons School

This frightening disaster happened at 4.35am on a Saturday morning. I woke up with a fright, and I peered through the blind. I said, “Turn on the lights.” I seriously thought that I was in a nightmare! So I screamed really loudly for Mum. Then everybody came to the fire and it was only glowing so we chucked in some wood and newspaper and we finally got some light! Then we got our sleeping bags and sat in front of the fire (getting ready to run outside in case there was another one!) I said to Mum, “I thought it was somebody taking our house away!” Then Mum told me it was an earthquake! I didn’t know that New Zealand had earthquakes. Mum said, “Kate just sat in her bed and she thought it was a ride!” We were so lucky because we’ve got a Lockwood home. We didn’t get any cracks! I think my first earthquake was pretty scary!
