“Then the lights went off”-Evangeline, 5, Waimairi Primary

I was trading stickers with my friends in the library when the earthquake happened. And then all the books in the library fell off the shelves and some of the things hung up came undone. Then the lights went off.

They all went out one of the doors and then we all rushed to find our teachers. It was pretty easy to find mine because she wasn’t on duty – she was outside our classroom. Everyone cried. We all went to the field and could see liquefaction everywhere. Soon after that Mum came and picked us up.

We went home to have icecream and sandwiches for tea!

  1. I can’t wait to see you back at school Evangeline. We are getting the library all tidied up for you and your friends.

    Hi Evangeline

What a surprise this earthquake was then in the middle of trading stickers!

It sounds as though you have some pretty great teachers who looked after you well before your Mum picked you up.

I bet Mum was very pleased to see you as much as you seeing her too.

The tea sounds lovely, sandwiches and ice cream…is that your favourite?

I am thinking of you lots Evangeline and your family as well.
