‘My story’-Matthew, 6, Halswell School

When the earthquake happened I didn’t know why everyone was running and screaming because I couldn’t feel it at first. Then I felt it. I knew it was an earthquake and when I ran to my classroom there was liquifaction all around it. It was flooding. I was a bit scared. Then we went onto the field. It was funny because all the liquifaction was like fountains everywhere. Then I waited until Mum picked me up. When we were at home, my sister and I sat on chairs in the doorway for most of the day. That night there were a few atftershocks.

    Hi Matthew

How happy you must be now to have finished that day!

It is good that you have written on here so that we can all find out what is like for people like you in the middle of it all.

The liquifaction sounds awful, I have seen it on the tv and I am sad you have it there and so much of it too.

I think I would be a bit scared too with it all coming up like fountains, what a strange experience.

Your Mum would be so pleased to see you when she came to pick you up, I hope she is well too.

Please send my very best wishes to your family and a big hug to you.
