‘Earthquake’- Willi, 7, Hoon Hay School
Rattle, roll, boom, bang! I can sense danger in the air… E A R T H Q U A K E ! ! ! I was just out on the field playing soccer with my friend Ben when it happened. Yikes! My head nearly hit the tree. I was just about to score a good goal too. I saw people pouring onto the field. Ben put the ball down and went racing onto the field. Still shaking! People were crying. Some were OK. The teachers came out quickly and told us to sit in lines of twos on the field. We had to wait there until the Mums and Dads came to pick us up. I saw my older brother Christopher and he stood up and yelled over to me “Was I OK?” so I gave him a smile and did the thumbs up. I waited for my Mum to pick me up. Dad came too and gave us a big hug. I was not worried at all. There were only 4 people in my class that weren’t crying. I felt sorry for the ones that were. When we got to go home I got to go in Dad’s car. I saw flooding and heaps of liquefaction on the way home. When we got home I had a big surprise when I went inside, especially when I went into my bedroom, because the bookshelf had tipped over and it was a bit of a mess too. There was a pretty big dint in the wall. When my brother got home I had loads to tell him.
Hey Willi
Lots going on down your way! I am sorry that so much is happening and so many people are hurting.
You sound like a kind person when you say you felt sorry for those that were crying, good on you.
There will be lots of clearing up and your lovely energy and strength will be much needed now.
Many of us outside of Canterbury are trying to help in different ways.
Stay strong Willi, we are strong people us New Zealanders and you are one of the best!

What a well written story Willi! You captured the moments of the earthquake so well. It was great to see you at school on Saturday to help with cleaning up all the liquefaction. Keep safe and see you when school opens up again.

Hi Logan. Our house is good. The school needs some repairs. I didn’t score the goal, unfortunately the earthquake rattled the ball away to Ben. When we get back to school I can’t wait to see my classroom. I just hope it will be OK.

Hi Willi
Fancy me finding your story on this website! Sounds to me as though you were very brave. Just as well Dad came to rescue you. I can’t imagine what liquefaction must look like. Did any get into Mum’s garden? I enjoyed your story. I will email you and Chris this week.
Brian says to tell you you should be playing rugby!!!
I hope your week goes well.
