‘Day by Day’- Hannah, 13, Avonhead Primary School

Day by day, there are the shakes

And the silent screams of history are heard.

The lone sound of a siren call,

And the street ghosts cry out in abandonment.

Throughout the city, families unite,

As the only light to be seen,

Are the words of God and the torches of fear,

Along with the hope that dawn will begin.

Time rolls on

As the rest of the world is oblivious,

To the horror that has just prevailed,

Under the waning moon.

The sound of crashing and creaking is felt,

And each reminder is deadly.

The mothers and fathers of last generation,

Cannot deprive Mother Nature of her right to the land.

The people join together as one,

While they strive to reclaim a state of normality,

But the mental and physical scars,

Will never fully heal as they wish it to.

Sincerity is shown throughout the land,

As the skies brighten and fade,

And the people are thankful for their lives,

But terror still looms as there are shakes,

And all we can hope,

Is that we have learned,

To live our lives gratefully,

Day by day.

A very deep and insightful poem Hannah – you touched on all the ideas, feelings and issues I have felt with my family during this time. Well done -your poem will go with you into history and remind you about this life time experience. Thanks
