Descriptive writing by Kiwi Class, Year 4-6 at Ladbrooks School

  • There was a terrible after shock, rattling the ground like a monster beneath my feet
  • The earth shook like it had been placed in a rocking chair and with a crack the ground broke.
  • Sand volcanoes broke the surface of the ground, the Avon splashed over its banks
  • The sound of glass shattering pierced in my ear drums like razor sharp knives slashing my skin
  • The ground was shaking like the milkshake mixer at Grandmas house
  • 4.35am, a devastating earthquake stuck Canterbury, thousands of homes got destroyed
  • The ground shook like a terrifying beast below the earths crust, screaming and jumping around, causing an horrific time for us.
  • Clear glass windows smashed while bricks and roof timbers slid off
  • Liquefaction flooded the streets like an angry herd of bulls churning up all the concrete and paths as they go
  • It went from utter silence to a fierce horrific roller coaster on the ground
  • It shook like jelly and I was still asleep like a bear hibernating
  • It was just like a devastating dream that shook me like I was on a furious bull
  • My house has terrifying cracks all over the roof and the floor is like a road map
  • At 4:35am a devastating, horrific and horrible 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit Canterbury last weekend.
  • People were running to their doorways as if lightening bolts were striking the ground with a big force.
  • At 4:30am there was a huge earthquake, it was like a rollercoaster on the ground swaying from side to side.
  • The earthquake shook like jelly as we went down to the lounge.
  • It was dark and freezing at 4:35am when the rattling got stronger and stronger, louder and louder.
  • It shook like jelly on a spoon
  • I nearly got shaken out of my bed like there was a horrific monster shaking my house.
  • The house was shaking like mad and it felt like my bed was going to flip over.
  • The earthquake sounded like a huge truck going down our hallway.
  • At 4:35am a terrifying and devastating disaster struck Christchurch that shook the house to bits.
  • On Saturday at 4:35am a terrifying earthquake shook my house like it was the end of the world.
  • Glasses smashed on the rock hard floor and bottles tumbled from the cupboards above

Wow! What awesome descriptive writing! It did feel like an angry monster under the ground who was shaking us fiercely about! Isn’t it great to realise that we were able to survive an event like that and that we live in a community where people help and support each other in times of trouble.
