‘The whole thing started shaking’-Elijah, 7, Paparoa Street School
I was on the pole about to slide down when the whole thing started shaking. I thought someone was at the bottom shaking it. Then I realized that it was an earthquake. I didn’t feel scared. I jumped down as quickly as I could. Children were wandering around, some were crying, looking for teachers to help them. Teachers started coming out onto the field. I managed to find some children from my class who were lining up. I sat down with them. My teacher was checking that all the people from my class were there, making sure that no one was lost. Not long after that my Mum and Dad came to pick me up. I was very happy to see them.

I am glad you wrote this piece on this website so I can read about your experience. It sounds pretty awful when the shaking started.
What a relief you have great teachers that got you all into a safe area and friends to be with on the field. I am sure you would have helped one another.
Mum and Dad would have been mighty pleased to see you and of course I can imagine how happy you were too when they picked you up.
Please take care of yourself, you are very precious!
