‘The Geonet Quake’-Kahu, 6, Addington School
It was lunchtime 22 February 2011, I had taken my lunchbox to my bag and was helping the teacher by taking the wet day signs in. I had just taken the last sign inside and stopped to have a breath when the ground started shaking and the trees started swaying. I didn’t know what was going on until the teachers told us that it was an earthquake. We got on the ground. I got in to a turtle in a flash. We all got together at the court. It was a very long wait. It was very cold the teachers brought out some blankets. It took a long time for all our mums to come and get us. The teachers looked after us.
The End
I think your story really describes what it was like, you were lucky to have some wonderful teachers to keep you safe.
Thanks Mum, I was happy that you were there with me and that Dad was safe.
Kahu, I thought this was a wonderful story about what happened to you at school on the day of the big earthquake. I am so pleased that you and your class are all safe.
Kahu – it must have been very scary when the earthquake happened. You were very brave! I liked your story very much – it helped me understand what it must have felt like for you.
I hope your Mum was able to give you a big hug after the earthquake.
We have been thinking about you a lot. Love Aunty Manda xxx

Uncle Simon
Thanks Uncle Simon. It is good being back at school, today we had funday Friday on wednesday, it was cool.
Hi Kahu
Jeepers creepers …that was a shock you had when you were taking in the wet day signs.
You must be fast to get into a turtle in a flash, well done. That’s a smart move you know.
Your teachers sound very good to look after you so well whilst you were waiting to be picked up.
I reckon Mum would have been pleased to see you!
Take care now Kahu, on this earth you are very precious!
From Ella in Auckland.
THanks Ella, it was a shock. I was lucky because my mum was at school with me, she is the principal.
Hello Kahu,
I liked your story and that you told me the trees were shaking. We had big winds and rain here in Australia at the same time.
It sounds like your teachers are very thoughtful and kind Kahu. It was a great idea to keep you all warm with blankets. I think I would have liked to sing and dance once it was all over.
Best wishes to you and your family and the people at Addington School
Hi Deborah, you had a lot of rain and big storms in Australia lately, that would not be fun. We needed the blankets because we could not go back into our rooms to get our jackets. The earthquake came at lunchtime.

Kahu, I am pleased that the teachers looked after you and kept you safe and warm. If they hadn’t I would have had to give the principal a telling off.
