‘My story’- Abigail, 3, Barnardos Kidstart
When the earthquake happened I was very scared. Jacquie, Emma, Rachael, Chelsea and Jack were there too. We were having lunch and jumped under the table and held on to the table legs. I was ducking down when Mummy came and I popped my head up and saw her. When we came out, there was a big huge crack in the driveway and it was ginormous! I got carried over so I didn’t get my ballet slippers dirty. Mummy had come in Helen’s car and I was in the front of the car. I’ve never been in the front of the car before, I’m usually in the back! Earthquakes happen because the earth wants to get itself comfortable.
great stuff Bryce [pops&nana
Dear Abigail
I am sure you would have been scared with the earthquake, I would have been too!
I live in Auckland and we didn’t have the terrible scare here.
Good Mummy to be so close to you and what a lovely Mummy to be able to make sure you didin’t get your baller slippers dirty.
What a surprise to see the huge crack in the driveway. And what a surprise to be in the front of the car, I guess that would be a bit of an adventure.
I shall be thinking of you all the time and hope things get better soon.
From Ella in Auckland.
Hi Abigail,
Liam and Charlotte liked reading your story about the earthquake. Charlotte was pleased that you didn’t get your ballet slippers dirty. Liam says that he has never been in the front seat of a car – what was it like?
We are looking forward to seeing you and your Mummy soon in Hawkes Bay.
Love Aunty Karen, Uncle Justin, Liam and Charlotte xxx
good luck get well stay safe
Hi Abigail, what a big brave girl you are! I would have been pretty scared too and I’m glad that Mummy could be there quickly. You were smart to get under the table, I remember learning that at School too. Anna and Julia miss you lots and are really glad that you are safe and that your cats are too. Love, Peter
I was so pleased that you were brave and you all did what Jacquie said and had a big adventure under the table untill your mummy came with Emma and Rachaels mummy.
Love and hugs from Grandad Bill and will see you soon
Questions arising…
“Where is the story?” asks Anahera
“On the computer” I reply
“Did her mummy carry her over the buildings?”
“No, just over the crack in the road.”
“When it’s fixed can Abigail walk?”
“Yes”
“But not right now”
“That’s right”
“Were the other bits ok for Abigail to walk on?”
“I think so”
“I would like to take some photos of Abigail. I would like to see a picture of the earthquake from Abigail’s story”
“Abigail might draw one for you”
“Did her Mummy carry her over the earthquake?”
“She carried her over the crack caused by the earthquake”
“Did her Mummy carry her so she couldn’t fall in?”
“Yes”
“Who does go in the back of the car? Did some other children go in the back”
“I think so”
“I would like to ride in Abigail’s car one day”
Hi Abigail,
I just loved reading your letter. What an adventure you and your friends have had, and how brave. We are looking forward to seeing you in Havelock Nth. Betsy is too.
Hi Abigail
What a brave girl you are! Thanks for sharing your story with us – what an adventure!
We are thinking of you and hope to see you sometime soon

Hi Abigail,
How brave are you… we think you are a real brave little girl. We are 7 years older than you and
come from Hamilton. We are sure we would be really scared if we experienced an earhtquake
like you did. It was good that your mummy came quick to give you lots of cuddles and kisses.
We hope that the earthquake is feeling really comfortable so that it never has to move around
again. Lots of people in our school and in Hamilton send you a big hug.

Hello Abigail,
I just loved your story. What a big adventure you have had. You must be so brave , hiding under the table until Mummy came to get you ! I am glad you didn’t get your ballet slippers dirty. I am pleased your pussycats are alright.
Have a lovely holiday with Grandma and Grandad in Havelock North. That will be fun and you will see Liam and Charlotte again.
