‘Earthquake Disaster’- Kate, 11, Weedons School
Bang! Crash! Smash! Saturday 4th September was a big disaster for Christchurch. At 4.35 a 7.1 magnitude earthquake went through Christchurch and destroyed the town.
I remember getting under my bed and falling and trying to stand and falling. Trying to stay under my bed was a challenge. Hearing the noise and feeling the ground move was very scary for me. It was dark and cold, we looked for a torch. The kitchen was full of glass and food.
We sat in the door frame while dad looked for a candle and light. Dad got the gas. Then a knock on the door, it was our next door neighbours. Their house was ok.
It started to get lighter. My dad and me went to check the horses, and Millie, my horse was not eating. We went to the road to see the other neighbours. One letterbox had moved around.
The piano moved 5cm from the wall. Mum’s china cabinets were screwed to the wall but the doors opened and everything fell on the ground. The fruit bowl fell but the vase stood on the top. There are still aftershocks.
The Epicenter is a couple of hundred metres away from the school. The train lines had moved like an S shape. Nobody got killed but a taxi driver had a near miss from falling bricks. He put a note on a window. We got power at 6.00pm no Saturday
I am so proud of this piece of writing Kate, well done!
